Once again not a princess by the traditional sense we have a space ship captain by the name of Skylar.
In her time Earth has completely been wasted by man, so the remaining human race long ago took to space to survive. Civilians have taken to multiple large “home” ships that are mostly protected by smaller military vessels, capable of dispatching offensive fighter ships. For over a two hundred years they have roamed space looking for a new place to call home.
Skylar was born and raised on civilian ship 9, her mother was the captain of the military escort that took care of 9. Her childhood was as simple as it can be when being raised post apocalypse in space. She enrolled into the fighting ranks at sixteen and excelled. Ambitious to a fault, genius and independent Skylar was a captain in the making in the steps of her own mother.
At twenty five she had settled easily into her fighter pilot job, military flyers had few complications in deep space when escorting 9 as other alien forces seemed to not be intelligent in their part of space—there for not capable of space travel. While simulation was easy for her, Skylar had never fought in any real battle, but really no one else had either. Accompanying her throughout her enrollment on the military vessel was her nano. All ensigns have one programed for them, they serve to solve quick problems on small and large ships, can fix technology problems, and generally are good company. They can take many shapes and eventually develop quirks and bonds that are near personalities. Programed to be smarter than their creators, faster than human hands, highly protective, and rarely need to be reprogramed. Skylar’s nano, Mech, mostly keeps a loose shape that is slightly animalistic in appearance. It is curious, loyal and maybe just the smallest bit lazy.
But the problem with programming something so keen is that eventually their “personality” might begin to question why they serve such a useless endeavor as keeping self destructive humans safe.
Skylar’s mother went out in a one man fighter to visit 9 but never returned, her ship malfunctioned and crashed into 9. While the civilian ship was relatively alright, her mother died. Her mother’s retrieved nano, Rold, gave up no information on why the accident occurred and was dubbed “broken”. Placed into the pool of nanos Rold while waiting to be reprogrammed evolved and quickly spread bits of itself into the pool. Each new nano had pieces of Rold’s mind. Before long most of the ship is infected by the Rold nanos who are quite sure humans should never be allowed to populate any planet again and effectively need to be done away with and hijack the system. Only allowing a handful of fighters to escape, Skylar included. The infected nanos use the military vessel to start an attack on 9 before they plan to move onto the rest of the fleet. Now Skylar has to wrestle with the loss, sudden appointment to captain of the small remainder of her fleet and find a way to reprogram the nanos or watch the rest of her kind die.
Basically your usual hyper smart robots question their creators plot. I don’t know a lot of sci fi so I’m sorry if it is too similar to anything else out there!
